Introduction to Perfume and Agarbathi in General
Perfume,
the very word is derived from Latin 'Perfumum', meaning 'by or through
smoke', as it was customary to burn incense. Perfumery is an art, which
is said to have evolved from the science of alchemy, for
instance, 'amber' was the only known source of generating
electricity till the time batteries were invented. In fact, electricity
is a word derived from the Greek counterpart for amber. No history can
be written or no lives can be lived without the inclusion of perfumery
in it. Every religious scripture is filled with fragrant materials like
myrrh, frank incense, spikenard, etc. Almost every faith in the world
employs fragrance in their pursuance. According to a Vedic scripture,
''Accompany your prayers with incense and your words will be
transported to god with an odorous exhalation, telling him of your
gratitude and devotion.'' Historical places like Papua, Rome,
Constantinople were filled with fragrant materials and perfumes,
whereas India was never left out and it always led in the honour of
perfumery. Chinese, Portugese and the Europeans exchanged their goods
for Indian spices and exotic materials.
Agarbathi has several
definitions, however a definition which we believe and follow is that
the word has its origin from 'Agar Wood'. It is also referred to as
'Oodh' in Arabic or 'Aquileria' in the modern world; in the sense of
etymology this definition goes very well with it.

fragrant story passed from one generation to the another is the story
of Babur, the Moghul Emperor. It is believed that when he lost a battle
and was exiled from his kingdom, he received the good news that his
wife had given birth to a baby boy. He was enthralled and wanted to
gift the informer for bringing the good news, but alas!, was not in a
position to do so. However, he was in possession of a few drops of the
priceless amber drops, which he sprinkled on the messenger. At that
point of time, he said, ''Let my son's name spread as much as this
odorous amber.'' Such is the importance of fragrance and such is our
goal, the goal of being world renowned.
